For This Cause...

"For This Cause" sets out the reason why the Lord Jesus came to earth and suffered and died.

The Lord Jesus Christ was born into this world for a particular reason - He had a definite purpose in coming. Many Old Testament scriptures pointed forward to His birth, and His sufferings and death, hundreds of years before these events took place. It is remarkable how some passages refer to His death by crucifixion, even though this form of execution only came in with the Romans who were occupying the land at the time of Christ. For example Psalm 22v16 -"They pierced my hands and my feet". Also Isaiah 50v6 "I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting." When it came to His betrayal by Judas the very price that he would bargain for the Saviour was written and how the money would finally be used (Zechariah 11v12-13). What was so great about the coming of Christ to the earth that over the years this event should be foretold? Again, it was the purpose for which He was to come - that He might die as a sacrifice for sin. Since the entry of sin and the fall of man the "Great Sacrifice" was anticipated to provide redemption and satisfy God. Only a perfect sacrifice would be acceptable since God is just. Only one person could meet this requirement - God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. So, that He could die as a sacrifice for sin He became a man. "As the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death" (Hebrews 2v14). The Lord Jesus knew what His death on the cross would entail and how dreadful it would be but still He went on with one purpose in view - to do His Father's will. In the Garden of Gethsemane when Christ was contemplating His death - "this hour" - His agony of mind is portrayed in His prayers to God. "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." (Matthew 26v39). "And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, saying, Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but Thine, be done." (Luke 22v41-42). "Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour." (John 12v27). "And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly: and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground." (Luke 22v44). On a number of occasions people attempted to kill Him but they could not because "His hour was not yet come." (John 7v30 & John 8v20). He could have called for angels to rescue Him but He didn't - "but how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?" (Matthew 26v54). Rather when the hour was drawing near "He stedfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem." (Luke 9v51). The Lord Jesus Christ went on to the cross and suffered and died, being punished by God for our sins. "That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3v15-16). Since God has provided salvation for us so that we need not go to hell, the responsibility now lies with us. For "how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation" ? (Hebrews 2v3). Why should we suffer for our sins when Christ has died for them? This was the cause for which He came to earth and suffered and died - "that the world through Him might be saved" (John 3v17).
