Robert Surgenor

In the Bible God has used a variety of animals to teach man about His own nature. To provide salvation God gave "the Lamb of God" to be the sacrifice for sin.

"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee... and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee" (Job 12v7,8). We call them "dumb animals," but God in His infinite wisdom points us to these creatures that we may learn thereby. May the following illustrations prove interesting and instructive to the reader. THE DONKEY "For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt (a donkey)" (Job 11v12) Jewish law proclaimed the donkey unclean by birth (Leviticus 11v1?8). In like manner, God proclaims man unclean by his birth! "Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one" (Job 14v4). David exclaimed, "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity" (Psalm 51v5); thus "the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked" (Jeremiah 17v9). It is a mother of abominations, out of which proceed evil thoughts. adulteries, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, pride, and foolishness (Mark 7v21,22). Thus man in his natural state is completely ruined, defiled, and unfit for heaven. He is UNCLEAN! "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags" (Isaiah 64v6). THE OX "The ox knoweth his owner... but... my people doth not consider" (Isaiah 1v3) The ox knows his owner because of the benefits received from him, such as food, shelter, and care. In contrast, man considers not God. "In Him we live, and move, and have our being" (Acts 17v28). He fills their houses with good things (Job 22v18), yet man considers not the Giver. You can prove man's ingratitude in any restaurant. Observe how many bow their heads and thank God for their food before they eat. Man is an unthankful, unholy creature (2 Timothy 3v2). He considers not! "They were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten Me" (Hosea 13v6). THE FISHES "For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net... so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them" (Ecclesiastes 9:12) Latest statistics show that over 140 mortals die every minute, 8,400 every hour, 201,600 every day, and seventy four million every year! What an enormous flow of humanity into eternity! "It is appointed unto men once to die" (Hebrews 9v27). Not only is death unavoidable, but often unexpected. Like the net taking the fishes out of their realm, so death lurks everywhere, taking its victims quickly to another world - either heaven or hell. Are YOU prepared for this solemn occasion? "Man knoweth not his time"! "Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth"(Proverbs 27v1). THE BEAR "I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps" (Hosea 13v8) If it's a terrifying experience to meet a bear in such a frame of mind, what must it be for a lost sinner to meet an angry God in eternity? The theory that God is too loving to punish is a fable of the modern mind, contrary to the Bible. "Vengeance belongeth unto Me, I will recompense, saith the Lord ... It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10v30,31). "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6v7). THE STORK "Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times;... but my people know not the judgment of the Lord"(Jeremiah 8v7). Being a migratory bird, the stork knows when to return according to the seasons. But man, a far more intelligent creature, refuses to return to God, even though the season of judgment is near! Since man's iniquity has separated him from God, (Isaiah 59v2), God graciously has made a way for him to return. If it was to live, every donkey was to be redeemed with the death of a lamb (Exodus 13v13). Unclean man also needs to be redeemed if he's ever going to be in heaven. At Calvary, Jesus, the Lamb of God, sacrificed Himself to put away sin (Hebrews 9v26). He shed His blood to cleanse us from all sin (1 John 1v7). He died that He might bring us to God (1 Peter 3v18). On my mother's grave is written: "REDEEMED - with the precious blood of Christ." These are not mere words of human sentiment or intellect. These are living words, true words - the words of God! Look at 1 Peter 1v18,19 in your Bible and you'll see them, and may you, dear reader, take a lesson from these creatures, and come to Christ now for cleansing and eternal salvation. "Seek ye the Lord while He may be found ... Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon" (Isaiah 55v6,7)
