What is Christmas? What is it all about? To get an answer look into the Bible, the Word of God. There you will learn the meaning of the greatest event of all time; the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ into the World. Angels announced the manner of His birth to Mary and the fact of His birth to shepherds, while His resurrection was made known to wondering disciples. Angels and the Virgin The heavenly visitor Gabriel, an angel sent from God arrived in Nazareth with the tidings to Mary, a virgin espoused, "Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women...fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God...thou shalt, bring forth a son and shalt call His name Jesus. The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God" (Luke 1v28, 30-31, 35). Angels and the Shepherds Under a cool eastern sky shepherds were watching their flocks in the usual manner without any hint of the dramatic events that were about to unfold. Suddenly the night sky was illuminated as the angel announced "...Fear not: for, behold we bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which Christ the Lord" (Luke 2v10-11). Angels and the Cross The good tidings at the birth of the Lord Jesus contained these words "...to all people - a Saviour." Just as "...all have sinned" (Romans 3v23), then all need to be saved. "For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved" (John 3v17). To save men from sin and the judgment of God, someone must die and pay the awful price of sin. The Lord Jesus stepped in as the "...one mediator between God and men...who gave Himself a ransom for all" (1 Timothy 2v5-6). His life was laid down, His precious blood shed and on the cross He "...put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself" (Hebrews 9v26). As the Lord Jesus Christ suffered, bled and died on the centre cross at Calvary, angels remained silent. Angels, archangels, prophets and apostles could have no part in the matter of dealing with sin. The Lord Jesus alone paid the price, He alone provided salvation to meet the need of all, and He is the only saviour! There was no other good enough, to pay the price of sin; He only could unlock the gate of heaven and let us in. Angels and the Resurrection Since sin had been dealt with fully and finally, the Lord Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. Angels could not remain silent at such an event, but rolled back the stone of the empty tomb and declared "He is not here: for He is risen, as He said. Come see the place where the Lord lay" (Matthew 28v6). A risen, living, glorified Saviour is the only One to meet your greatest need, the forgiveness of your sins. Have you accepted Him as Saviour? You can do without many things at Christmas or indeed any time of the year, but not the Saviour and the great salvation He provided. God offers you salvation today through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The price has been paid and the provision is for all. Will you now receive Him by faith as Saviour and accept this great salvation? With such good news there is a warning. "For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation...?" (Hebrews 2v2-3). Salvation - So great! Neglect - So easy! Escape - Impossible!
