What is Christmas? What is it all about? To get an answer, look into the Bible, the Word of God. There you will learn the meaning of the greatest event of all time; the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ into the World. You will read about the good news from God - the gospel and its greatest gift of all. The Problem The message of the gospel addresses our greatest problem - SIN. Simply put, sin is coming short of God's standard. "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3v23). How did sin get into the world? Did God not create a perfect world? "Wherefore, as by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" (Romans 5v12). Adam the first man, was responsible for the entrance of sin into the world. That has caused havoc in God's wonderful and perfect creation; it separated man from God and sadly its consequences are still with us today. The Person Who can deal with sin? Men, prophets or even angels are incapable of dealing with sin. Only God has the remedy for sin; in love to the world of men He had created, God sent His Son into the world. While the baby that Mary held in her arms was her firstborn son, He also was the Son of God. "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given" (Isaiah 9v6). God gave His only begotten Son as "...the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1v29). The despised Jesus of Nazareth was "God...manifest in flesh" (1 Timothy 3v16). The Price Everything on display for the shopper has a price. So too, salvation as God's gift had to be purchased. The Lord Jesus Christ shed His blood and died at Calvary. On the third day after death He rose again from the tomb. He had fully paid the ransom price demanded by the throne of a righteous God on account of man's sin. The paying of this price was to provide for us everlasting life. Silver and gold could never provide forgiveness for the sinner. "...Not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold...but with the precious blood of Christ" (1Peter 1v18-19). Nothing less than the blood of Christ would be sufficient to meet the claims of a Holy God and the great need of a sinner. The Provision Just in the same way as natural life has fitted us for earth, we need everlasting life to fit us for Heaven. In the gospel, God now offers to everyone the greatest gift of all, everlasting life. "The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6v23). Like any true gift, this gift is free for those who receive it. The Lord Jesus Christ has already paid the price. It is now obtained by faith. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him" (John 3v36). Perhaps you will receive many gifts this Christmas season; some useful, some unwanted, some expensive. Make sure you receive the gift that you cannot do without - the greatest gift of all. You can receive that gift by confessing your sin and putting your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. This would then become the best Christmas of all! How can you go another day? Respond to Christ, do not delay; Just trust in Him, His Word believe. Eternal life you will receive.
