Easter- the events unfolding
(100 Pack)

by Gary Woods

The events of the crucifixion of Christ are detailed with their significance to us being emphasised.
As an event in the "Christian Calendar", Easter takes a secondary place in comparison to Christmas. With its endless parties, late night shopping and presents in abundance, Christmas has taken on a festive scene with fewer and fewer religious connotations. Easter with its "lower profile" changes our focus from a virgin, a baby, wise men and shepherds: to rejection, suffering and death. Around 2000 years ago three men went outside the city of Jerusalem to be crucified. As those three crosses were raised on the hillside of Golgotha with their victims nailed by the hands and feet, this was to be no ordinary day. As we consider the events unfolding, let us learn that the man on the centre cross is the same person who occupied the manger. Christmas, like any good story has little meaning unless you read the final chapter. The climax in the earthly life of Mary's child, the Son of God, was His rejection, crucifixion and resurrection! The Crucifixion In order for the scriptures to be fulfilled, the death of the Lord Jesus by crucifixion was necessary for us, "... Christ died for our sins according to the scripture ... was buried ... rose again ... according to the scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15v3-4). Our sins that separate us from God must be dealt with by a just sentence and a perfect sacrifice. On the cross He "... put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself" (Hebrews 9v26). This was not a martyr's death but a sacrifice on account of man's sin. "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God ..." (1 Peter 3v18). The Resurrection Mary Magdalene came early on the first day of the week to the tomb where the Lord Jesus had been laid. The stone to the tomb had been rolled away. What a message the angels had for this faithful disciple, "He is not here: for He is risen, as He said. Come see the place where the Lord lay" (Matthew 28v6). The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is an indisputable fact, for the apostle Paul says, "... He was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve (disciples): after that He was seen of above five hundred brethren at once ... seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all He was seen of me also ..." (1 Corinthians 15v5-8). The Lord Jesus Christ was the first to rise from among the dead and never to die again. The Ascension Having been seen by so many witnesses, after 40 days He led His disciples out to the Mount of Olives and "... while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight ... they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up ..." (Acts 1v9-10). What a joy to know that presently there is in Heaven, at the right hand of God, a living Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Result The commandment of the risen Christ to these disciples was simple, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptised shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned" (Mark 16v15-16). Sadly today, as then, the world at large has no time for the Son of God. The scriptures conclude, "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness: but unto us which are saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1v18). Dear readers, repent of your sins now, believe the message of the gospel and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour. Rest on the Word of God and not on feelings or experiences ..."For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3v16).
