What is Christmas? The Prophets & Their Prophecies
(100 Pack

G Woods

Christmas is really about the birth of the Saviour into the world. His birth was foretold hundreds of years before by the prophets of God.

What is Christmas? What is it all about? To get an answer, look into the Bible, the Word of God. There you will learn the meaning of the greatest event of all time; the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ into the World. Many of your Christmas presents will be surprises, but the gift of God's Son for man's sin was no surprise. It was foretold hundreds of years in advance by the prophets of God. His Birth Just over two thousand years ago a virgin whose name was Mary, brought forth her firstborn son. Remarkably, the prophet Isaiah prophesied of that event hundreds of years beforehand, "Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7v14). This indeed was the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ that took place in Bethlehem. Again, the place of His birth was foretold by the prophet Micah, "But thou, Bethlehem...though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of thee shall He come forth...whose goings forth have been from old, from everlasting" (Micah 5v2). The Prophets prophesied, the angels announced, the shepherds visited and the wise men worshipped. What an event! His Life Uniqueness marked the life of Christ when He was here in this world. This is recorded by the prophet Isaiah, "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek...to bind up the broken hearted...to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord" (Isaiah 61v1-2). When speaking to Zacchaeus in the city of Jericho, the Lord Jesus Himself declared the manner of the good tidings, "the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19v10). This was the purpose for which He came. Who are the lost? Sinners are lost and in danger of perishing. We are just like sheep who have gone far from God because of our sin, "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way" (Isaiah 53v6). His Death The perfect and unique life of Christ was not enough to save the lost from the judgment of God, He must die. The child of Mary, the Son of God - must die? Many feel it is unnecessary; some feel it is repulsive and for most it is a mystery, but for sinners it is essential. At Calvary the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified as foretold by the Psalmist, "they pierced my hands and my feet" (Psalm 22v16). Sinners need a saviour and lost sheep need a shepherd. The reason for the death of Christ as explained by the apostle Paul is very precious, "Christ died for our sins" (1 Corinthians 15v3). The Lord Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth His life for the sheep...my sheep hear my voice, and I know them...I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish" (John 10v11,27-28). At Calvary the heart of man was full of hatred and envy toward the Son of God. At Calvary the heart of God overflowed in love to those who loved Him not. His Glory The result of that life being laid down and blood being shed is salvation for the lost. That is not found in a dead Saviour, but in a living Saviour at God's right hand. After His resurrection the Lord Jesus said to two disciples as they journeyed on the road to Emmaus, "O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory? (Luke 24v25-26). Salvation, eternal life, sins forgiven; these are the blessed portion of all who receive Christ by faith as Saviour. Then you can truly say, "The Lord is my shepherd" (Psalm 23v1). "Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory" (Psalm 73v24).
